Workshops for the
Implementation of the
European Green Belt
The European Green Belt is divided into three sections – Fennoscandia and the Baltic, Central Europe and South Eastern Europe. As a result of the political developments, especially in South Eastern Europe, new borders have been established and old borders have a new or altered significance. Therefore, transboundary cooperation is in some places still in its beginnings, in others the borders constitute the EU or the Schengen borders, making effective nature conservation and regional development across borders a challenge for its stakeholders.
In order to foster cooperation and information exchange between the different stakeholders along the Green Belt, a project facilitating several regional meetings is financed by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN).
The project is coordinated by the Green Belt secreatariat, while the specific topics of each meeting are identified in agreement with local stakeholders and the regional coordinators. In general, the meetings are aimed at the regional level and at regional stakeholders such as experts from nature conservation, administrations and land-use. The Green Belt focal points contribute significantly during the course of events.
One of the main targets of the project is to identify focal regions, projects and partners in the respective regions, to communicate nature conservation and regional development approaches and to integrate them into the Green Belt work plan.
The first Central European Green Belt meeting, held in Mitwitz, Germany in October 2005, organised by the regional coordinator BUND and also funded by BfN, proved to be important and successful means to discuss progress achieved as well as present and possible future activities with the main stakeholders.
The first regional Green Belt meeting for South Eastern Europe took place in Novi Sad, Serbia in November 2005, in close cooperation with Euronatur and the Institute for Nature Conservation of Serbia.
In September 2006 the first Fennoscandian and Baltic States Green Belt meeting took place in Lahemaa National Park in Estonia in close cooperation with the University of Life Sciences, Tartu.
Having held the last pan European Workshop in Sarrod , Hungary in 2004 (also financially supported by BfN) the second Pan European Green Belt Workshop took place from 18 th -21 st November 2007 in Bratislava/Stupava. The workshop was organised in cooperation with the Regional Coordinators and the NGO BROZ in Slovakia .
The second regional Green Belt meeting for South Eastern Europe was held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, between October 19 th and 22 nd in 2008. Participants, representing different local partners from the Balkans, including National Focal Points, joined together to discuss the next steps and opportunities for further development of the Green Belt initiative in the region. Sharing experiences and discussing, which goals of the initiative have been reached, what remains to be implemented and what needs to be adjusted, formed the groundwork of the event. A special emphasis at the meeting was put on future project development on local products and services in the context of transboundary cooperation. The workshop was organised in cooperation with the NGO Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation under the motto "Mapping Synergies - Branding Ideas". Andrea Strauss
