Development of a Common Geo Database as a professional Basis for Conservation and Development of the European Green Belt

The Green Belt initiative aims to conserve valuable habitats along the former “Iron Curtain” and adjoining areas and to enable a pan-European habitat network. In order to do so besides project coordination and initiation and realisation of conservation efforts on all levels the creation of a common geo-database as professional basis for conservation and development is required.

The objective of this project is to
•  provide information and links to important protected areas
•  identify priority areas for future projects
•  record preconditions for Green Belt projects
•  publish results scientifically as well as in marketing
•  form regional identities based on natural values
•  gain influence on spatial planning in border areas.

The research and development project is supposed to lay the foundations - on the level of geographical and factual data - for putting international and national conservation efforts on a factual footing. In order to establish a common and transboundary geo-database as a professional basis for conservation and development of the European Green Belt, information from the participating states is to be brought together.

This requires the unification of all national and international geographic data concerning conservation areas along the European Green Belt, by means of cartographic transformation and projection processes. Once the data is stored in one single geographical information system, it can be used for further analysis and processing.

This project is funded by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the German Federal Foundation for Environment Protection (DBU).
