The vision

To create the backbone of an ecological network, running from the Barents to the Black Sea that is a global symbol for transboundary cooperation in nature conservation and sustainable development.

The Projects

The direct actions for the establishment of the European Green Belt include the definition of priorities for each section and country and the identification of focal regions where flagship projects can be implemented. The conservation areas on national level can with the help of regional development projects advance to an international habitat network of pan-European format, with opportunities for all participants. This will help to halt the loss of biodiversity – a goal that is supported by most countries in Europe and by the Countdown 2010 initiative.

Projects can be launched by IUCN in cooperation with local NGOs as well as from NGOs that use the IUCN's platform as a hub for communication and for addressing donors and partners. Nature conservation is of course not a turning back of times. In order to formulate conservation strategies, an integrated goal for regional development is needed. Long-term results depend on a planning, that is decoupled from political short-term goals.

Projects can take place on a pan-European, regional or local level and include two or more countries across or along the European Green Belt. All projects are nature conservation projects that are based on transboundary cooperation and regional development.
