The European Green Belt, our shared natural heritage along the line of the former Iron Curtain, is to be conserved and restored as an ecological network connecting high-value natural and cultural landscapes while respecting the economic, social and cultural needs of local communities.

R+D-Project "The European Green Belt as Part of Green Infrastructure"

The Research- and Development- (R+D-) project “The European Green Belt as Part of Green Infrastructure” (runtime: November 2015 – January 2018) supports the cooperation of stakeholders within the European Green Belt Initiative and the "European Green Belt Association e.V.". This is especially relevant in view of new topical focuses to be addressed like the subject of Green Infrastructure.

The three key aspects of the project are:

  • Strengthening the governance structure of the European Green Belt Initiative,
  • Initiation of a common strategical process for the European Green Belt
  • Elaboration of a concept for the representation and development of the Green Belt as part and model of Green Infrastructure.

This project ties up with the results of the R+D-project "Advancing the European Green Belt initiative" (2011-2014), in which’s scope the European Green Belt Association e.V. was established. The new project will be jointly implemented by EuroNatur (Regional Coordinator Green Belt Balkan), BUND Project Office Green Belt (Regional Coordinator Green Belt Central Europe) and BUND Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Regional Coordinator Green Belt Baltic).

This project is financially supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with means of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
