Discovering the Czech-German border: Journey to the source of the Kouba River and the history of the Všeruby Pass
The BESTbelt project brought together nature lovers from Bohemia and Bavaria on a joint journey to the source of the Kouba River. They explored the nature and history of the Všeruby Pass and the magical Tanaberk. Borders connect us!
"Connecting People and Nature across Borders" – this is the motto of the BESTbelt project ‘Cross-border handshake between people and nature‘, implemented in the Czech-German border region by the Czech NGO Spolek Ametyst in cooperation with the German partner LBV-Zentrum Mensch und Natur. On September 14, 2025, enthusiasts from both sides gathered to hike the Všeruby Pass, the most vital link between Bohemia and Bavaria for millennia.
The exciting route led along the banks of the Kouba River (Chamb) all the way to its source. During stops at various points of interest, participants learned about the transformations of the local landscape and the historical milestones that shaped the area of the former Iron Curtain, which is now part of the European Green Belt.
Part of the program featured a presentation of current results from the ongoing biological survey of local flora and fauna. Another highlight was the introduction of a joint project by students from the Všeruby and Eschlkam schools focusing on the beaver and its positive impact on the environment (more information in the previous news).
To ensure the youngest hikers (and not just them) enjoyed the journey, interactive activities were prepared. Children and adults alike could experience the work of field biologists firsthand. Using entomological nets, they caught insects and learned how to identify local plant species.
The entire event culminated at the Tanaberk pilgrimage site. This magical location offered participants not only a spiritual pause and a deep insight into local history but also breathtaking panoramic views of the Czech-Bavarian landscape.
Throughout the journey, the organizers succeeded not only in showcasing the beauty of the region and sharing knowledge but also in strengthening the relationships between people on both sides of the border.
