On Sunday, 23 September 2018, Karin Kowol from BUND Thuringia will inform about the inner-German Green Belt under the title “From Death strip to Lifeline”. Venue is the so-called “Wild Cat Village” Hütscherode near the Green Belt Thuringia-Hesse and located at the edge of national park Hainich. The inner German border was strictly guarded by fences and walls, barbed wire, land mines and watchtowers. At the same time, the area along the Iron Curtain developed as a retreat for nature: the inner-German border strip became a refuge and migration corridor for more than 1,200 rare and endangered plants and animals, like the Wild Cat. The event will be accompanied by an excursion to the Green Belt Thuringia, which is supposed to be designated as National Natural Monument by 2019, the latest.
