Experience the Green Belt of Hesse: Landscape conservation associations launch a digital platform

Since this year the Green Belt of Hesse has its own website. With the site www.gruenesbandhessen.de, the state of Hesse is supporting the initiative to develop the region along the former inner-German border as a recreational and travel destination for nature- and history-oriented tourism.

The centerpiece of the website is an interactive map showing all the border museums and memorial sites. It also features the high-quality hiking and biking trails along the European Green Belt, as well as the Werra canoeing area. Because the Werra as a border river and the paths that open up the European Green Belt offer visitors opportunities to actively discover the unique history of the region. For all destinations, the website provides detailed information, contact details, travel recommendations, GPS data, and, where available, downloadable maps and brochures. In particular, the website explains why the biotope network is worthy of protection and supplements this with information on specific projects in Hesse. The website also features nearby attractions along the former border strip in the neighboring states of Thuringia, Bavaria and Lower Saxony. A cross-regional calendar of themed events will further enhance the offerings.

All three Hessian districts along the European Green Belt contributed to the development of the website and provided information. In addition to the landscape conservation associations responsible for managing the protected area in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Werra-Meißner districts, the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve for the Fulda district, as well as the tourism representatives of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, Rhön GmbH, and the Northern Kuppenrhön, have contributed to the website.

You can visit the website here.

The website was funded by the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment and developed by the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land, which, as the marketing agency for the Werra-Meißner district, possesses the necessary expertise. As the landscape conservation association for the Werra-Meißner district, the Geo-Nature Park also manages approximately half of the area designated as a National Natural Monument.
