European Green Belt Camp in Lower Austria

Planned activities:

Young adults from 10 different countries will be working to maintain and restore species-rich dry grasslands along the European Green Belt. Over a two-week period, activities will first take place in the Hollabrunn area and then in the Weinviertel cliff zone. As well as the practical work, there is a great deal to learn about the region’s flora and fauna and about ecological issues. The participants will visit protected areas along the European Green Belt and discuss options for land management.

Part 1: Central Weinviertel

During the first part of the European Green Belt Camp, urgently needed work on dry grassland conservation areas at Galgenberg, Dernberg, Bockstall and Geißberg will be carried out jointly. The main focus will be on the annual late mowing, but will also on pruning back regrowing black locust shoots and clearing scrubs from further areas that have not yet been tackled.

• 8 September: Bockstall
• 9 September: Geißberg

Part 2: Cliff zone of the Weinviertl

During the second part, necessary habitat management measures, such as mowing and scrub clearance on the sometimes steep and rocky slopes, are being carried out to preserve the species-rich dry grasslands of the Weinviertel cliff zone along the European Green Belt, which serve as valuable refuges for rare animal and plant species.

To join the activities, please make sure to be at the relevant site by around 9.00 am. Please let the organizers know briefly in advance and if you have, bring work gloves and any tools you may need (loppers, small saws)!
