Following the Lynx on Ilinska Mountain

Background & Location

The celebration took place on Ilinska Mountain in North Macedonia from 18 to 20 September 2026. The three-day gathering brought young people together in a mountain landscape that offers an opportunity to explore the region’s biodiversity and the conservation challenges facing the endangered Balkan lynx. The activities combined outdoor education, shared exploration and practical care for the local environment, connecting young people with the vision for the European Green Belt.

Objective

The main objective was to raise awareness among young people of the Balkan lynx, its endangered status, and the importance of protecting its habitat. Participants were encouraged to understand how healthy, connected ecosystems support wildlife conservation and why biodiversity protection is central to the European Green Belt vision through direct experience in nature. The programme aimed to inspire a sense of personal responsibility and a stronger commitment to caring for the natural environments around them. Trail marking and cleaning were supplementary activities during the educational hike, rather than the event's main focus.

Approach & Results

The educational activities focused on the Balkan lynx, the challenges it faces, and the importance of conserving its natural habitat. Participants explored these themes in the mountain environment, learning through discussion and first-hand observation.

One of the highlights was a group hike along an abandoned trail. As they walked, participants marked and cleaned the path, combining outdoor learning with a practical contribution to the area. Information boards were also installed along the trail. This work complemented the central focus on the Balkan lynx and was carried out as part of the hike.

Despite the challenging weather conditions requiring some adjustments, the participants successfully completed the activities together. The celebration demonstrated how nature education, teamwork, and simple practical actions can foster a stronger connection between young people and the European Green Belt. The European Green Belt Days celebration concluded with participants sharing their experiences, gaining new knowledge and leaving with fresh motivation to protect biodiversity.
