Hands-on nature conservation activity at the Maltsch/Malše in Upper Austria

Planned activities:

The Maltsch is a river forming the border between Austria and the Czech Republic – situated at the European Green Belt. Here, one can still find wet meadows, extensive floodplains and nutrient-poor meadow slopes. These provide important habitats for meadow-nesting birds that have become rare, such as the whinchat and the red-backed shrike, as well as the fire lily.

As part of the European Green Belt Days 2026, a meadow slope of high conservation value will be mown and the cuttings removed.

How to take part in this European Green Belt Days celebration?

• Tools will be provided, and refreshments will be available. Please bring work gloves and ensure you wear suitable footwear, as parts of the slope are very steep.
• Meeting point: NATURA 2000 Information Centre at the Nature Conservation Union’s ‘Green Belt of Europe’, Marktplatz 2, 4262 Leopoldschlag
• Carpooling arrangements will be organised from Linz.
• Alternative date in the event of bad weather: Saturday 19 September 2026
