Workshop on building traditional wooden fences

These are the planned activities for the European Green Belt Day:

The celebration will be a full-day workshop on building a traditional wooden fence in the style of Eastern Finland! The aim of the workshop is to restore cultural environments through traditional building methods. Many fields and gardens in Finland used to be surrounded by traditional wooden fences. Nowadays, however, there are only a few skilled builders of traditional wooden fences. Wooden fences are environmentally friendly, long-lasting and attractive. In the workshop, participants will learn the basics of traditional fence building and gain an understanding of cultural heritage. The workshop is organised in a cultural environment close to the old Orthodox church in the village of Sonkajanranta.
As well as learning to build fences, participants will learn about the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve and the European Green Belt, and their local and European significance.

This European Green Belt Days celebration is part of a EU-funded BESTbelt project
