Mount Lanaro: From the Cold War to the Natura 2000 Network
These are the planned activities for the European Green Belt Day:
A full-day guided excursion from Sagrado di Sgonico/Zgonik to the summit of the Regional Natural Reserve of Mount Lanaro/Volnik, taking in a circular trail on both sides of the Italian-Slovenian border, to raise awareness of the historical facts of the Iron Curtain era and its transformation into a place of biodiversity and wellbeing.
Along the itinerary, two narrating voices will offer a naturalistic and historical perspective on the landscape. A nature guide from the Estplore Society of Licensed Regional Guides and Pierpaolo Donvito, a local researcher and author of books and articles about the Cold War in the Trieste area, will lead participants through the day-long event. The association Rete Italiana EGB APS will provide an introduction to the day and its international context.
There will be a special tasting session on the hilltop, featuring a packed lunch of local products (cheeses, cold cuts and a traditional cake) from Ostrouska Farmhouse, a local zero-km farm in Sgonico/Zgonik.
