Where Europe once ended: from the bunker of Purgessimo to the protected meadows of Tribil

Planned activities: 

This guided tour along the former Iron Curtain on the Italian–Slovenian border showcases both natural and historical heritage. Participants will visit the protected biotope of Prati di Tribil, which has remained inaccessible for decades and has not been subject to intensive farming. This has allowed a rich biodiversity to develop, including rare flora, wild orchids, and a wide variety of insects and birds. Next, the tour enters Mount Purgessimo — known as Karkoš in Slovenian and Vuespit in Friulian — to reach the Galleria di Purgessimo, a Cold War bunker carved into the rock. It is one of the few surviving cave fortifications that were once operated by the Italian Army's border defence infantry. Together, these two sites demonstrate how nature and time have reclaimed places that were once shaped by military tension and inaccessibility. This event is intended for local residents, families, and anyone interested in natural and cultural heritage. 

After the walk, participants will gather at a local restaurant to enjoy a shared lunch of traditional Natisone Valley dishes. This will support the local economy and showcase the region's culinary heritage.
