Protection of native fruit varieties in the Maleshevo and Belasitsa regions
The transboundary project was implemented by the Association Center for medical herbs and berries Ambrozija in collaboration with the NGO Biomatera and the Macedonian Ecological Society (MES) from November 2024 to April 2026.

Challenge
The old apple, pear and plum varieties found in the Maleshevo and Belasitsa regions are living treasures of the local natural and cultural heritage. Despite their importance, they are under threat from decades of intensive agriculture and local use as fuelwood. Rural depopulation is also weakening the transmission of traditional knowledge. Without action, these valuable genetic resources, local stories and potential green business opportunities could disappear.
Objective
The project protected native fruit varieties by promoting their natural and economic value, combining scientific expertise with local knowledge. The project aimed to conserve old trees, strengthen cross-border cooperation, engage local communities and young people, and demonstrate how traditional fruit varieties can promote biodiversity, cultural identity, sustainable tourism, and green employment opportunities.
Approach
The project worked directly with farmers, protected area managers, village mayors, young people, producers and tourism businesses, as well as elderly people. Activities included:
- mapping, documenting and identifying old fruit trees;
- training in practical measures for revitalisation and conservation, including grafting and pruning, as well
- revitalisation demonstrations;
- workshops for young people on green jobs;
- promoting local products and tourism potential.

Achieved Results
The project has created a stronger local network and a practical basis for the long-term conservation of native fruit varieties. More than 100 old trees of eight different varieties have been mapped and identified, and pilot conservation sites have been established. Furthermore, more than 60 local stakeholders have been trained through field demonstrations and workshops for young people, as well as cross-border workshops.
The project is creating momentum for future demonstration orchards, local branding, green jobs, and sustainable tourism initiatives.
