Revitalising Nature and Heritage
These are the planned activities for the European Green Belt Day:
The celebration takes place in the heart of Montenegro's Key Biodiversity Area, which includes the Bojana River and its delta, Ulcinj Salina, Lake Shas, Ada Bojana Island, Long Beach and adjacent marine areas. This hydrologically dynamic system, rich in karst, rivers and traditional agriculture, faces growing challenges of flooding, erosion, vegetation loss, habitat fragmentation and biodiversity decline.
During the celebration, the following activities will take place:
- Placing information boards about protected old trees and seed donor trees and local “champions” of biodiversity.
- Distribution of educational posters and materials on the importance of seed collection.
- A symbolic tree-planting action to restore vegetation cover.
- A citizen science monitoring session, where locals, schools, landowners and visitors contribute to biodiversity data collection.
- A field trip under the theme “Get to know your homeland”, inviting the community to explore the rich mosaic of natural and cultural heritage sites.
The celebration aims to support the BESTbelt project's mission of protecting and revitalising biodiversity and ecosystems of the Lower Bojana/Buna Basin. By combining hands-on restoration, citizen involvement and education, the celebration strengthens climate resilience, safeguards traditional landscapes and enhances pride and awareness among local people.
This European Green Belt Day celebration is part of an EU-funded BESTbelt project.
