Water and people along the European Green Belt – Community knowledge and dialogue for the sustainable future of Lake Fertő

Lake Fertő is one of the most valuable natural treasures in Central Europe, whose special hydrological conditions have determined the land use activities and everyday life of the people living on the shores of the lake for centuries. The Hungarian villages along Lake Fertő are located in the European Green Belt, preserving their relative untouchedness from the decades of the Iron Curtain and the distinctive character of the natural state of the World Heritage-listed Fertő landscape.

Many BESTbelt projects were successfully completed in autumn 2025!

Since the launch of the BESTbelt project, a total of 49 projects have been initiated, focusing on protecting local biodiversity, restoring important habitats, raising environmental awareness, organising various workshops and collaborating with municipalities and other key local stakeholders. Now, a further 13 projects have been successfully completed.

Pasvik-Inari Transboundary Area in Norway and Finland was successfully re-certified as EUROPARC Transboundary Park

The stunning Pasvik-Inari Transboundary Area, consisting of five protected areas in Norway and Finland, has been successfully working bilaterally between both countries since February 2022. Just recently, the transboundary Protected Areas has passed the audit of the EUROPARC Federation, thereby re-certifying the cooperation between the border parks for the period 2025–2030.
