Several BESTbelt projects have recently been closed, producing a wide range of results that benefit the European Green Belt and the regions involved in the projects.

In an award ceremony watched by millions, the “Golden Hen” was presented to BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) for its longstanding engagement in preserving the Green Belt in Germany.

Each year, EuroNatur organizes an international photo competition called “European Treasures of Nature.” For the 33rd time, EuroNatur and its partners are now inviting both amateur and professional photographers to capture images of the diverse world of European flora and fauna and the continent’s most beautiful scenery in striking photographs.

A year has passed since the start of the BESTbelt project, ‘Restoring species-rich grasslands on former Robinia forest sites‘, in which project lead Land Trust Hády has been helping the national park in its fight to combat invasive tree species and protect rare native species.

Lake Fertő is one of the most valuable natural treasures in Central Europe, whose special hydrological conditions have determined the land use activities and everyday life of the people living on the shores of the lake for centuries. The Hungarian villages along Lake Fertő are located in the European Green Belt, preserving their relative untouchedness from the decades of the Iron Curtain and the distinctive character of the natural state of the World Heritage-listed Fertő landscape.

Join scientists and practitioners on 5 December 2025 to explore how ecological restoration strengthens biodiversity and connectivity along the European Green Belt, supporting species migration, resilient habitats and cross-border cooperation.

Since the launch of the BESTbelt project, a total of 49 projects have been initiated, focusing on protecting local biodiversity, restoring important habitats, raising environmental awareness, organising various workshops and collaborating with municipalities and other key local stakeholders. Now, a further 13 projects have been successfully completed.

The stunning Pasvik-Inari Transboundary Area, consisting of five protected areas in Norway and Finland, has been successfully working bilaterally between both countries since February 2022. Just recently, the transboundary Protected Areas has passed the audit of the EUROPARC Federation, thereby re-certifying the cooperation between the border parks for the period 2025–2030.
